Abstract Mould temperature control has a significant influence on component quality and costs in the plastic injection moulding process. In case of standard applications isothermal control, which mould is maintained at one level, sufficient. For special (e.g. optics; long, thin components; microstructures) variothermal using cyclically changing temperatures beneficial. Therefore, use infrared radiators offers advantages terms achievable investment but low heating rates efficiency. This paper therefore investigates possibility increasing efficiency energy input by radiation into metals particular aluminium. this purpose, simulation model developed. The numeric models used are validated means experiments. A short-wave radiator investigated, consisting tungsten filament quartz glass tube. emitter power varied from 1200 to 400 W. An aluminium sample with thickness 10 mm square base an edge length 60 investigated. measured non-irradiated side centre surface distance 20 it while being irradiated. numerical model, ray tracing carried out first step, result as Neumann boundary condition for thermal second step. created can serve basis design more complex geometries.
